About the project
The Connecting through Heritage project is part of the association of cities and municipalities in the Rijeka urban agglomeration area, which links the City of Rijeka as the project promoter with the municipalities of Mošćenička Draga, Lovran, Kostrena, Čavle, Viškovo and Klana, as well as the towns of Opatija, Kraljevica and Kastav.
The Republic of Croatia signed a Partnership Agreement at the end of 2014 that specifies the cities eligible for applying for the ITI mechanism (Integrated Territorial Investments mechanism). The project involves cities of 100,000 inhabitants, which form urban agglomerations, and cities of 50,000 inhabitants, which form urban areas. The ITI mechanism is a mechanism of the European Union for the period from 2014 to 2020 set up with the aim of strengthening the role of cities as drivers for economic development. The mechanism serves for implementing activities of sustainable urban development with an emphasis on the territorial dimension and enables funding for the implementation of integrated activities.
Since the project involves the use of a significant amount of EU funds, the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds was obliged to issue a call for the selection of the ITI area, where the Rijeka urban agglomeration won the right to use the Integrated Territorial Investments (ITI) mechanism in the Republic of Croatia.
The Connecting through Heritage project includes coordinated activities focused on a common vision of developing a recognisable and unique urban cultural heritage, while promoting the development of sustainable tourism. The fundamental purpose of the project is building new and revitalising existing historical cultural heritage with the aim of creating new tourism products and integrating them into a single tourism offer in the Rijeka urban agglomeration.
The Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds has issued a decision awarding a grant in the amount of HRK 36,369,926.74 for funding the strategic project. The project was submitted to the Call through the direct award process under the Competitiveness and Cohesion operational programme 2014-2020.
In the Connecting through Heritage project, The Rijeka Tourist Board is the promoter of the promotion and visibility of the integrated tourist destination work package. The aim of the Promotion and the visibility of the integrated tourist destination work package is to inform as many interested members of the public as possible about the project and its results, to spread knowledge and awareness among different target groups, to influence their behaviour and opinions on the possibilities of cultural and natural heritage, as well as alter their approach and attitude.
